Visit the Colosseum
The Colosseum was begun under Emperor Vespasian around 70–72 AD and inaugurated by his son Titus in 80 AD. Emperor Domitian later completed important parts of the complex.
The amphitheatre hosted gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and other public spectacles. Its monumental scale reflects the political power of the imperial government and its effort to provide highly organised entertainment for Rome’s population.
Depending on your ticket, explore the arena level, upper seating areas, or the underground hypogeum, where corridors, rooms, lifts, and staging mechanisms supported the events above. Hypogeum access is route-specific and is not included with every ticket.
Discover the Roman Forum
Continue through the Roman Forum, the civic centre of ancient Rome. The valley between Rome’s hills was drained and gradually developed into a dense area of temples, political buildings, basilicas, monuments, and public spaces.
Walk along or near the Via Sacra and learn about sites such as the Curia, Temple of Vesta, Arch of Septimius Severus, and other remains. A guide can help reconstruct the Forum’s original functions from the surviving columns, foundations, paving, and inscriptions.
Explore Palatine Hill
Rise above the Forum to Palatine Hill, one of Rome’s most important archaeological areas. Roman foundation mythology connects the hill with Romulus, but the story belongs to tradition rather than confirmed historical evidence.
The hill later became an elite residential district and an imperial centre. Augustus established a palace there, while later emperors, including Domitian, expanded the area with large palace complexes, terraces, gardens, and ceremonial spaces.
