Discover Senso-ji, Tokyo’s Historic Buddhist Temple
Explore Senso-ji, a Buddhist temple traditionally associated with the year 628, when a Kannon image was discovered in the nearby Sumida River. In 645, a Kannon hall was built at the site. Walk Through Kaminarimon and Nakamise-dori
Pass through Kaminarimon, the outer gate of Senso-ji, and continue toward Hozomon and the main hall. Along the way, explore Nakamise-dori, a historic shopping street lined with about 90 shops selling Japanese snacks, crafts, and souvenirs. Look for local favourites such as ningyoyaki, small cakes often filled with sweet bean paste.
Senso-ji’s main hall also displays calligraphy attributed to Noguchi Sekko, regarded as one of the three leading calligraphers of the Edo period.

Asakusa has a long history as an entertainment district, with traditional performing arts and geisha culture forming part of its past.
