Discover the History of Santa Maria del Fiore

Construction of Florence Cathedral began in 1296 under architect Arnolfo di Cambio. The building was consecrated in 1436, after Filippo Brunelleschi completed the enormous dome that remains one of the most important achievements in Renaissance architecture.

The cathedral follows a Latin-cross plan with a central nave and two side aisles. Its long construction history brought together different architectural styles, artists, and building campaigns, creating the complex monument visitors see today.

Admire the Marble Façade

From Piazza del Duomo, admire the cathedral’s geometric exterior of white, green, and pink marble. The present façade was completed in the 19th century, replacing an earlier unfinished design, so its appearance reflects both Florence’s medieval heritage and later historicist architecture.

A guide can help you understand the relationship between the cathedral, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Baptistery of San Giovanni, which together form one of Florence’s most recognisable architectural ensembles.

Look Up at Brunelleschi’s Dome

Brunelleschi’s monumental dome rises above the cathedral with its distinctive terracotta-tiled exterior. Inside, the vast surface is covered by The Last Judgment, a fresco painted by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari between 1572 and 1579.

The fresco was created decades after Brunelleschi’s dome was completed. Its dramatic scenes and monumental scale add another historical layer to the cathedral’s interior.

Explore Renaissance Stained Glass and Sacred Art

Florence Cathedral contains 44 stained-glass windows, including works associated with Renaissance artists such as Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Paolo Uccello, and Andrea del Castagno. Their coloured light and figurative designs complement the cathedral’s architecture and religious artworks.

The interior is more restrained than the richly patterned exterior, directing attention toward the dome, frescoes, chapels, and structural scale of the building.

Plan Your Florence Cathedral Visit

A visit may take around 1–3 hours, depending on whether your itinerary includes the cathedral interior, a guided explanation of Piazza del Duomo, or additional monuments in the Duomo complex. Dome and bell-tower access may require separate reservations and extra time.

Check the selected package for admission details, timed-entry requirements, accessibility information, and any restrictions during religious services. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only when stated in the tour details.
