Learn the Cathedral’s History

After the conquest of Granada in 1492, Queen Isabella ordered a cathedral to be built on the site of the former main mosque. Construction began in 1523 under architect Enrique Egas, who planned a Gothic-style building. In 1528, Diego de Siloé took over and transformed the project into a Renaissance design. Later architects continued the work, and Alonso Cano designed the Baroque main façade.

The cathedral’s interior is arranged around five naves, an ambulatory, and the circular Capilla Mayor, or Main Chapel. Siloé’s unusual circular design is associated with the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. A colonnade and sculptural details draw attention to the chapel’s central space.

Look Up at the Dome and Stained Glass

The Capilla Mayor’s dome is illuminated by stained-glass windows arranged in two tiers. The upper 10 windows were made by Juan del Campo, while the lower 14 were created by Teodoro de Holanda. Together with the dome’s religious imagery and interior artwork, they help explain the cathedral’s blend of Renaissance design and devotional art.
