Discover Hagia Sophia’s Layered History
Commissioned by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia was inaugurated in 537. The architects traditionally associated with the present structure are Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus.
The building served as a Christian cathedral for centuries before Constantinople became Ottoman in 1453. It was then converted into an imperial mosque, opened as a museum in 1935, and returned to mosque status in 2020. Its architecture and decoration reflect these successive historical periods.
Admire the Monumental Dome
Hagia Sophia’s vast central dome is one of the defining achievements of Byzantine architecture. Pendentives help connect the circular dome to the building’s square central space, creating the impression of a floating structure above the main interior.
A guide can explain how windows, arches, marble surfaces, and later structural interventions contribute to the building’s distinctive scale. Natural light varies throughout the day, so the visual atmosphere may differ from one visit to another.
See Byzantine Mosaics and Ottoman Details
Look for surviving Byzantine mosaics, including the Virgin and Child in the apse and the Deësis mosaic in the south gallery, when the relevant areas are accessible. These works provide an important connection to Hagia Sophia’s Christian past.
Ottoman additions, including large calligraphic medallions and other mosque furnishings, show how the building was adapted after 1453. The combination of Christian mosaics and Islamic artistic elements makes Hagia Sophia a uniquely layered monument.
Visit an Active Mosque Respectfully
Hagia Sophia continues to function as a mosque. Visitors may need to follow designated routes, observe clothing requirements, remove shoes where required, and avoid restricted areas during prayer or religious events. Access to galleries, mosaics, and interior spaces can change because of worship, conservation, security, or official arrangements.
Check the selected tour details and current visitor rules before your visit. A guided tour can help explain both the building’s history and the etiquette expected inside an active place of worship.
Plan Your Hagia Sophia Visit
A visit may take around 1–3 hours, depending on the route, access arrangements, group size, and time spent viewing the interior. Admission conditions, guide access, and photography rules depend on current regulations and the selected package.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only when stated in the tour details.
