Explore Gyeongbokgung, the Main Joseon Palace

Visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, established in 1395 as the primary palace of the Joseon dynasty by King Taejo, formerly Yi Seong-gye. The name Gyeongbokgung is commonly translated as “Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven.” Explore its grand gates, ceremonial halls, courtyards, and pavilions while learning about the history of the royal court.

The National Folk Museum of Korea is also located within the palace grounds and offers exhibitions about Korean life and traditions. Note that Permanent Exhibition Hall 1 is scheduled to remain closed for renovation from September 30 to December 21, 2026; check current museum notices when planning your visit. Discover Changdeokgung and Its Secret Garden

Explore Changdeokgung Palace, built in 1405 as a secondary palace to Gyeongbokgung. Its buildings follow the natural terrain, and the palace complex is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Korea Heritage Service UNESCO

The palace’s Secret Garden includes historic pavilions, ponds, and landscape features such as Buyongji Pond, Jondeokjeong Pavilion, and Ongnyucheon Stream. One distinctive structure, Cheonguijeong, has a thatched roof and stands beside a small rice paddy linked to royal agricultural traditions. Access to the Secret Garden follows its own admission and scheduling arrangements, so check whether it is included in the tour you select.

Donhwamun, Changdeokgung’s main gate, dates to 1412. After it was destroyed during the Japanese invasion of 1592, it was rebuilt in 1609. Korea Heritage Service

Learn About the Korean Empire at Deoksugung

Located in Jung-gu, Deoksugung offers a distinct chapter of Korean royal history. When Gojong proclaimed the Korean Empire in 1897, the palace, then called Gyeongungung, became the imperial court. The name Deoksugung was adopted after Gojong’s abdication in 1907. Korea Heritage Service

Stroll along the palace’s stone-wall road and admire the contrast between traditional Korean buildings and Western-style architecture, including Seokjojeon Hall.
