Discover the History of Madrid’s Royal Palace
The current palace was built after Madrid’s former Alcázar was destroyed by fire in 1734. Filippo Juvarra prepared the initial design, while Giovanni Battista Sacchetti developed and completed the project.
King Charles III became the first monarch to live in the new palace in 1764. Today, the building remains the official residence of the Spanish royal family for ceremonial purposes, although the royal family normally lives elsewhere.
Set beside the Plaza de la Armería, the palace forms a large quadrangular complex. Its western side looks toward the Campo del Moro gardens, while its interiors contain some of Madrid’s most important historic rooms and collections.
Admire the Main Staircase
The Main Staircase, designed by Francesco Sabatini, creates a dramatic entrance to the palace interiors. Its broad marble steps and monumental architectural setting were designed for ceremonial movement through the royal residence.
Look upward toward the ceiling fresco associated with Corrado Giaquinto, which presents the Triumph of Religion and the Church. The staircase also features sculpted lions and other details that reinforce the palace’s formal character.
Visit the Throne Room
The Throne Room is one of the palace’s most richly decorated state rooms. Its ceiling fresco was painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, while crystal chandeliers, red textiles, mirrors, and ornate decoration create an elaborate ceremonial interior.
A guide can explain how the room was used for formal audiences and royal ceremonies, as well as how its decoration reflects the political culture of the Spanish court.
Explore the Royal Chapel
Continue to the Royal Chapel, designed by Sacchetti as part of the palace complex. Its dome, columns, religious artwork, and carefully arranged interior create a distinct transition from the palace’s secular state rooms.
The Royal Collection also includes historic musical instruments, including instruments made by members of the Stradivari workshop. Availability of specific rooms and collection displays may vary according to the visitor route.
