Learn the History of the Pantheon
The Pantheon we see today was largely rebuilt under Emperor Hadrian between approximately 118 and 125 AD. It replaced an earlier structure commissioned by Marcus Agrippa around 27–25 BC.
Hadrian preserved Agrippa’s inscription on the portico, creating a direct link between the earlier monument and the imperial building that survives today. A guide can explain how the Pantheon changed from a Roman religious structure into one of the most influential buildings in architectural history.
Admire the Granite Portico
The Pantheon’s entrance is formed by a monumental portico with 16 granite columns arranged in three rows. Many of the shafts were transported from Egypt, demonstrating the scale of Roman logistics and the empire’s ability to move valuable building materials across the Mediterranean.
The triangular pediment and deep porch create a striking contrast with the enormous circular interior beyond the bronze doors.
Stand Beneath the Concrete Dome
Inside, look upward at the Pantheon’s vast dome, widely considered the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. Its recessed coffers reduce visual weight while creating a carefully structured geometric pattern.
At the centre, the oculus measures approximately 8.2 metres across and remains open to the sky. It provides the building’s principal source of direct daylight and connects the interior with the changing conditions outside.
Discover the Christian Church and Historic Tombs
In 609, Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon as the church of Santa Maria ad Martyres. Its continued religious use helped protect the building through the medieval period, although the monument has also experienced later alterations.
The Pantheon contains the tomb of Raphael, one of the great artists of the Renaissance, as well as the tombs of members of Italy’s royal family, including Victor Emmanuel II and Umberto I.
Plan Your Pantheon Visit
A guided visit may take around one hour, depending on the route, group size, security procedures, and time spent learning about the architecture. Combining the Pantheon with Piazza della Rotonda, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, or other nearby landmarks requires additional time.
Check the selected tour for admission, timed entry, religious service restrictions, accessibility information, photography rules, and current opening arrangements. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only when stated in the tour details.
