Discover the Story Behind Park Güell

Work on Park Güell began in 1900, when industrialist Eusebi Güell commissioned Gaudí to design a residential estate for affluent families. The housing project did not develop as intended, and Barcelona opened the site as a municipal park in 1926. Today the park covers more than 17 hectares across the hillside area of Gràcia.

The park combines Gaudí’s architecture with the natural contours of the hillside. Its elevated paths and terraces offer wide views over Barcelona and, on clear days, toward the Mediterranean.

See the Dragon Stairway and Entrance Pavilions

Enter the Monumental Area to explore the main staircase and its colourful mosaic figure known as El Drac, or the dragon. The sculpture is also described as a salamander and is covered in trencadís made from broken ceramic pieces. The staircase forms part of the park’s historic rainwater-collection design, with the dragon’s mouth serving as an overflow.

Near the entrance, two distinctive pavilions feature imaginative shapes and decorative tile roofs. Their design introduces the playful architectural style found throughout the park.

Explore the Hypostyle Room and Nature Square

The Hypostyle Room contains 86 columns inspired by the Doric order. It was designed as a covered marketplace for the planned residential estate. Above it lies Nature Square, also known as the Greek Theatre, bordered by a long, undulating bench decorated with trencadís mosaic.

Admire the colours and patterns from the paths and seating areas while helping protect the original surfaces. From the terrace, take in the surrounding landscape and Barcelona skyline.

Plan Your Visit to the Monumental Area

Park Güell includes free-access green areas as well as the ticketed Monumental Area. Entry to the restricted area requires a timed ticket, and advance booking is recommended because visitor capacity is limited. Check the official schedule and ticket conditions for your visit date.

A visit may take around 1–3 hours, depending on your route, pace, and whether your ticket includes the Monumental Area. Hotel pickup and drop-off are tour-specific and are not included in every package.
