Learn the History of the Prado Museum
The Prado’s neoclassical building was designed by Juan de Villanueva and commissioned by King Charles III in 1785 as a Cabinet of Natural History. In 1819, it opened to the public as the Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures under King Ferdinand VII.
Today, the historic Villanueva Building forms the heart of the museum. The later Jerónimos extension added further visitor and exhibition areas, including spaces connected with the restored Cloister of the Jerónimos.
Discover El Greco, Bosch, and Rogier van der Weyden
A guided route can introduce you to El Greco’s The Nobleman with his Hand on his Chest, recognised for its expressive portrait style and spiritual intensity.
Continue to Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, one of the Prado’s most celebrated works, and The Descent from the Cross by Rogier van der Weyden, a major example of early Netherlandish painting.
Your guide can explain how religious imagery, symbolism, technique, and patronage changed across medieval and Renaissance Europe.
See Velázquez’s Las Meninas
One of the museum’s essential works is Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez. Explore the painting’s complex arrangement of figures, mirrors, viewpoints, and implied spectators while learning why it remains central to discussions of Spanish Baroque art.
The Prado also preserves important works by Francisco de Goya, including portraits, historical scenes, and paintings that reflect the changing political and social environment of Spain.
Explore Rubens, Titian, and the Italian Collection
The collection includes major paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, including The Three Graces, as well as important works by Titian and other Italian masters.
Rather than following a single floor-by-floor sequence, a guided visit connects paintings across the museum’s rooms and galleries. The route can be adapted to focus on Spanish painting, Flemish art, Italian Renaissance works, or a selection of the Prado’s best-known masterpieces.
Plan Your Prado Museum Visit
A visit may take around 1–3 hours for a highlights tour. Exploring the museum in greater depth, visiting temporary exhibitions, or covering several artistic periods requires additional time.
Check the selected tour for admission, timed-entry arrangements, guide services, photography rules, accessibility information, and current gallery access. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only when stated in the tour details.
