Learn the Reichstag’s History
Designed by architect Paul Wallot, the Reichstag opened in 1894. The Neo-Renaissance building later endured fire, wartime damage, and periods of political division. After German reunification, British architect Norman Foster led its renovation, adding the glass dome as part of a modern redesign. The Bundestag returned to the building in 1999.
On the exterior, look for the inscription Dem Deutschen Volke, meaning To the German People, which was installed in 1916. Preserved Cyrillic inscriptions left by Soviet soldiers in 1945 can be seen inside certain areas of the building, depending on the visitor route.
Visit the Glass Dome and Roof Terrace
The Reichstag’s glass-and-steel dome is about 23.5 metres high and 40 metres wide. Its central mirrored light sculpture directs daylight toward the plenary chamber below. Spiral ramps lead visitors upward through the dome, offering views of the parliament chamber and the Berlin skyline.
The dome represents transparency in parliamentary government, while connecting the historic building with contemporary architecture. The experience is subject to visitor access, parliamentary activity, weather, and maintenance schedules.
Plan Your Reichstag Visit
Admission to the dome and roof terrace is free, but visitors must register in advance and bring valid identification. Access may be limited or temporarily suspended. The Bundestag lists the dome as closed for maintenance from October 19 through October 30, 2026, while the roof terrace remains open during that period. Check the official visitor notice before your visit.
A visit may take around 1–3 hours, depending on the tour format and time spent on the roof terrace. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only when stated in the selected package.
