Explore the Basilica’s History and Architecture
Dedicated to Stephen I, Hungary’s first king, the basilica was built over more than five decades. Construction began in 1851 under József Hild. After the dome collapsed in 1868, Miklós Ybl revised the design, and József Kauser oversaw the final stages. The church was consecrated in 1905, and its final stone was placed in 1906. Its architecture combines Neoclassical foundations with later design influences.
The basilica follows a Greek-cross plan and rises to 96 metres, matching the height of the Hungarian Parliament Building. The height is also associated with 896, the traditional date of the Magyar settlement of the Carpathian Basin.
Admire the Dome and Interior Mosaics
Inside, look up toward the central dome and its detailed mosaics. The central composition depicts God the Father, surrounded by religious artwork and decorative elements. The interior also features marble, painted ornament, and gilded details.
See the Holy Right Relic
The Basilica Treasury preserves the Holy Right, a venerated relic attributed to Stephen I. The mummified right hand is displayed in an ornate reliquary. Treasury access may require a ticket option separate from a basic church visit, so check what your tour includes.
Visit the Panoramic Terrace
Take the elevator or climb the steps to the panorama terrace around the dome. From above, enjoy wide views over Budapest, including the Danube, the Buda Hills, and Pest’s rooftops. The terrace’s opening hours and access may vary with events, weather, or maintenance.
Plan Your Basilica Visit
A visit may take around 1–2 hours, depending on whether you explore the interior, visit the Treasury, or go up to the panorama terrace. Church services and special events can affect sightseeing access. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only when stated in the tour package.
