Getting Around

Many of Athens’ main attractions, including the Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma Square, are close enough to explore on foot or by taking a short metro ride. The Athens Metro has three lines. Line 1 is the historic overground route connecting Kifissia with Piraeus, while Lines 2 and 3 serve central Athens and other parts of the metropolitan area. The original description of the interchange stations needs clarification: Line 1 connects with Line 2 at Attiki and Omonia, and with Line 3 at Monastiraki. Line 3 also provides the direct metro connection to Athens International Airport, although airport journeys require a special ticket or fare. OASA Visit Athens

Athens uses an integrated ticketing system covering the metro, tram, buses, and trolleybuses. Tickets can be purchased from station counters and automatic machines using ATH.ENA Tickets or ATH.ENA Cards. A standard urban ticket is valid for 90 minutes after its first validation, while daily, five-day, and tourist tickets are also available. Passengers should validate tickets when boarding buses, trams, and trolleybuses, and validate them when entering and exiting the metro gates. The tram is particularly useful for reaching the southern coast, with routes connecting central Athens with areas such as Faliro, Glyfada, Voula, and Piraeus, although some journeys require a change rather than a single direct ride from Syntagma. OASA Ticket Prices STASY Tram Timetables

Buses and trolleybuses extend public transport to neighborhoods and suburbs not directly served by the metro or tram, although traffic can affect journey times. Taxis are widely available and can be convenient for airport transfers, late-night travel, or destinations outside the rail network, but fares depend on distance, traffic, and applicable surcharges. Rental cars can be arranged through local companies, yet they are rarely the easiest option in central Athens because of congestion, parking difficulties, and narrow historic streets. For most visitors, the most practical combination is walking in the historic centre, using the metro for longer journeys, and choosing buses, trams, or taxis when they offer a more direct route.
