Getting Around
Prague has an efficient and affordable public transportation network made up of the Metro, trams, buses, and selected regional services. The Prague Metro has three lines: Line A, shown in green; Line B, shown in yellow; and Line C, shown in red. It is particularly useful for longer journeys across the city, while trams are often more convenient for sightseeing in the historic centre. Tickets are time-based and can be used across the integrated Prague public transport network, but paper tickets must be stamped before the journey begins. Tickets purchased through the PID Lítačka app or other electronic channels follow digital activation rules. Prague Integrated Transport - Metro How to Buy Tickets
Tram 22 is one of the most useful routes for visitors, offering attractive views while travelling through areas such as the National Theatre, Malá Strana, Hradčany, and the Prague Castle district. It stops close to Prague Castle and Loreta, while Strahov Monastery can be reached with an additional walk from a nearby stop rather than directly from the tram. Other tram routes provide access to Old Town, Vinohrady, Žižkov, and neighborhoods beyond the Metro network. Buses are especially useful for outer districts and destinations not served by rail, and night trams and buses operate after the Metro closes. PID Journey Planner
Taxis are available at official ranks, on the street, and through reputable booking apps. For a safer and clearer journey, travelers should use a licensed, metered taxi or a trusted ride-hailing service rather than relying on an informal vehicle arranged without a confirmed fare. Car rental is also possible, but it is rarely necessary for sightseeing in central Prague, where traffic, parking restrictions, and pedestrian zones can make public transportation more convenient. For most visitors, the best combination is to walk around the historic centre, use trams for scenic journeys, and rely on the Metro or buses for longer trips.
