Getting Around
Venice is best explored on foot, with narrow lanes, bridges, and waterfront paths connecting many of the city’s most famous landmarks. The historic centre is built across numerous islands in the Venetian Lagoon, and cars cannot travel through the pedestrian heart of the city. For longer journeys on the water, travelers can use vaporetti, the public water buses operated by ACTV. Private gondolas and water taxis are also available, but they are separate services and are generally much more expensive than public transportation.
ACTV’s vaporetto network operates multiple routes across the Grand Canal, the lagoon, and nearby islands such as Murano, Burano, and Lido. Route numbers and schedules vary, so the claim that Venice has exactly 19 vaporetto routes should be avoided. Travelers can buy time-limited tickets, daily passes, and longer passes through Venezia Unica ticket offices, self-service machines, authorized retailers, or the official AVM Venezia app. ACTV buses and trams mainly serve the mainland areas of Mestre and Marghera, while the People Mover connects Piazzale Roma with Tronchetto. From Marco Polo Airport, visitors can reach Venice by Alilaguna water bus, private water taxi, or road bus to Piazzale Roma. Alilaguna operates several airport routes connecting the airport with central Venice, Lido, and other lagoon destinations, while ACTV’s airport bus service also reaches Piazzale Roma. From Treviso Airport, direct ATVO bus services connect the airport with Mestre and Venice, including the city’s main bus and transport areas. For most travelers, the most practical combination is walking through the historic centre, using vaporetti for longer lagoon journeys, and choosing a private water taxi only when speed, privacy, or direct hotel access is especially important.
