Hotels and Key Attractions
To truly absorb the immense scale and rich dynastic heritage of Beijing, your choice of neighborhood anchors your entire experience. If diving into the imperial past is your top priority, staying in the central Dongcheng or Xicheng districts is a strategic must. High-end launchpads like the Grand Hyatt Beijing and the opulent Waldorf Astoria Beijing, alongside the character-rich Nostalgia Hotel Beijing Xidan, place you within a convenient 2-kilometer radius of the legendary Forbidden City, including the grand Hall of Supreme Harmony, Tiananmen Square, and the National Museum of China. Meanwhile, travelers looking to marvel at the architectural symmetry of the iconic, UNESCO-listed Temple of Heaven can base themselves less than two kilometers away at the Manxin Hotel Beijing Tiantan Park, ManXin Qianmen Courtyard Hotel, or the Beijing Chongwenmen Tongpai Hotel. On the flip side, if you prefer soaring skyscrapers, high fashion mega-malls, and a buzzing international culinary scene over imperial courtyards, you may want to skip the ancient core altogether and head east to the ultra-modern Chaoyang District.

Getting Around
Beijing has an extensive and affordable public transport network, with the subway forming the fastest way to travel across the city and avoid traffic. The system now includes far more than the previously stated 19 lines, with regular subway routes serving major districts and separate airport services connecting the city with Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport. Travelers should check the latest subway map and station information before setting out, as operating hours and final train times vary by line and station.
City buses reach almost every neighborhood and can be a useful option for short journeys or places farther from subway stations. Beijing has more than 1,500 regular bus lines, and fares are generally calculated by distance. A Yikatong transport card can provide a 50% discount on many urban bus journeys, rather than the 60% discount stated in the original text. Depending on the service, travelers may also be able to use mobile payment or QR-code options, although visitors should check the current payment requirements before boarding.
Taxis remain a convenient choice when carrying luggage or traveling to attractions that are not close to a subway station, although the final fare depends on distance, traffic, time, and the route taken. The original estimate of approximately US$10 from central Beijing to the Summer Palace should not be treated as a fixed price. Use an official metered taxi or a reputable ride-hailing service, and keep your hotel’s name, address, and destination written in Chinese to make communication easier. Carrying a map or displaying the destination on your phone can also help when the driver does not speak English. Beijing Bus
