Getting Around
Rome’s historic centre is highly walkable, and many famous attractions can be reached on foot from one another. For longer journeys, the city’s Metro is usually the fastest public transport option. Rome currently has three main Metro lines: Line A, Line B/B1, and Line C. Line A is useful for reaching the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Square via Ottaviano, while Line B stops at Colosseo for the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Line C serves additional areas and connects with the older Metro network at selected stations. ATAC Rome Tickets and Passes
Buses, night buses, and trams extend the network to destinations not directly served by the Metro, although road traffic can make bus journeys slower and less predictable. The same Metrebus Rome tickets can generally be used on ATAC buses, trams, trolleybuses, and the Metro within the permitted area and validity period. Travelers can purchase tickets from Metro station machines, authorized tobacco shops, newsstands, the ATAC app, or use contactless payment through Tap&Go on eligible services. A standard ticket is valid for 100 minutes, while 24-hour, 48-hour, 72-hour, and weekly passes are also available. Tickets must be activated or validated according to the purchase method before travel. ATAC Ticket Purchase
Taxis are widely available at official ranks, near railway stations, airports, major squares, and popular attractions. They can also be booked by telephone or through supported apps, and using an official metered taxi is preferable to accepting an unlicensed vehicle. Car rental is possible, but it is rarely convenient for sightseeing in central Rome because of traffic, restricted-access zones, narrow streets, and limited parking. For most visitors, the best combination is to walk around the historic centre, use the Metro for major cross-city journeys, and choose buses, trams, or taxis when they provide a more direct connection.
