Getting Around

Tokyo has one of the world’s most extensive transportation networks, combining JR trains, private railways, subways, buses, taxis, bicycles, and walking routes. The original reference to five JR lines in central Tokyo is too limited, as many JR services operate across the capital. The Yamanote Line remains one of the most useful for visitors, forming a loop that connects major hubs such as Shinjuku, Yoyogi, Harajuku, Shin-Okubo, Shibuya, Ueno, and Tokyo. Shinkansen services depart mainly from Tokyo and Shinagawa stations for destinations along the Tokaido route, while many northbound services use Tokyo and Ueno stations, depending on the train and destination.

Tokyo’s subway network consists of 13 lines operated by two companies: Tokyo Metro runs nine lines and Toei Subway operates four. These lines serve much more than the area inside the Yamanote loop, reaching many neighborhoods across the wider metropolitan area. The Tokyo Subway Ticket provides unlimited travel on all Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines for 24, 48, or 72 hours, but it does not cover JR trains, private railway lines, or most buses. For greater flexibility, travelers can use a rechargeable IC card such as Suica or PASMO, including tourist-oriented versions or mobile options where available. These cards can be used on participating trains, subways, buses, vending machines, and shops. Tokyo Metro Official Ticket Information

Taxis are convenient for short trips, late-night journeys, or locations that are difficult to reach by rail, although they cost more than public transportation. Rental cars are available, but they are rarely the most practical choice in central Tokyo because of traffic, parking costs, and the city’s excellent rail network. Cycling can be enjoyable in quieter neighborhoods and along riverside routes, while major attractions are often easiest to explore on foot after reaching the nearest station. For most visitors, combining an IC card with a suitable subway or regional rail pass offers the most convenient way to travel around Tokyo.
