Getting Around
Berlin has an extensive public transportation network made up of the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, trams, and ferries. The U-Bahn is particularly useful for exploring the city, with nine lines serving central neighborhoods and outer districts. Most sections run underground, although some parts operate above ground, and the trains are easily recognized by their yellow-and-white design. The S-Bahn complements the network with suburban rail services that are mostly above ground, marked by the familiar green-and-white “S” symbol. Together, these systems provide fast connections between major attractions, residential areas, railway stations, and Berlin Brandenburg Airport. BVG Network Maps and Routes
Berlin’s buses and trams extend public transport to areas not directly served by the rail network. Trams are especially prominent in the eastern and northeastern parts of the city, while buses operate throughout Berlin and include sightseeing-friendly routes such as the journey through Tiergarten between Zoologischer Garten and Alexanderplatz. The city’s transport system uses the shared VBB fare structure, so one valid ticket can cover different modes within the selected fare zones and validity period. However, passengers must check whether a paper ticket needs to be validated: tickets bought from an app or some machines are already valid, while other paper tickets must be stamped before travel. BVG Tourist Tickets
For a more active way to explore Berlin, bicycles and bike-sharing services are widely available, while car rental is generally more useful for trips outside the city centre than for urban sightseeing. Taxis can be hailed on the street, found at designated taxi stands, or booked through an app or by telephone. Ferries are also part of the integrated public transport network on selected routes, offering a pleasant way to cross Berlin’s waterways. For most travelers, the best approach is to combine walking and cycling with the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, and trams, choosing a ticket for the correct AB or ABC fare zone.
