Getting Around
The Madrid Metro is one of the fastest and most convenient ways to travel around the capital. Its extensive network includes 12 main lines and more than 300 stations, connecting central neighborhoods with the airport and surrounding areas. The pink Line 8 links the city with Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, serving stations at both the T1-T2-T3 and T4 terminals before continuing toward Nuevos Ministerios. Metro services generally operate from around 6:00 a.m. until 1:30 a.m., although first and last trains, intervals, and airport access conditions can vary by station and line. EMT Madrid buses complement the Metro by serving streets and neighborhoods that are not directly connected by rail. The blue buses provide extensive coverage across the city, and passengers can check estimated arrival times and route information through EMT’s official website or app. Madrid’s light-rail system, known as Metro Ligero, operates several suburban lines in Madrid and nearby municipalities, but it should not be confused with the city’s main Metro network. For visitors staying several days, the rechargeable and contactless Tarjeta Multi is a practical option because it can hold different non-personal transport tickets. The card itself is valid for ten years, but it is not automatically a travel pass, so travelers must load the appropriate ticket or tourist travel product onto it. Tarjeta Multi - Comunidad de Madrid
Taxis are widely available at official ranks, near major stations, at the airport, and on busy streets. Madrid’s licensed taxis are white with a red diagonal stripe, and a green illuminated roof light indicates that the vehicle is available for hire. Cars can also be rented, but public transportation is generally more convenient for sightseeing in the city centre because of traffic, parking restrictions, and limited parking spaces. For most travelers, the best combination is to use the Metro for longer journeys, EMT buses for local connections, Metro Ligero for selected suburban destinations, and taxis when carrying luggage or travelling late at night.
