Getting Around
Kyoto is best explored by combining trains, subways, buses, walking, and occasional taxis. Although many central neighborhoods are pleasant to explore on foot or by bicycle, Kyoto is not entirely flat or compact, and several popular temples are located in hilly or widely separated areas. The city subway has two lines, the Karasuma Line and the Tozai Line, which are particularly useful for travelling across the central districts. Kyoto is also served by several railway operators, including JR West, Keihan, Hankyu, and Randen, so the most convenient route depends on your starting point and destination. Getting Around Kyoto - Kyoto City Official Travel Guide
Kyoto Station is an important hub for intercity travel. The Tokaido Shinkansen connects Kyoto directly with major cities such as Tokyo, Nagoya, and Shin-Osaka, while travelers continuing to Kobe, Himeji, Hiroshima, or other western destinations may need to use the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka, depending on the train service. The JR Nara Line provides a convenient connection from Kyoto to Uji and Nara, although journey times vary according to the train type and stopping pattern. Within the city, buses remain useful for reaching places beyond the railway and subway networks, including Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji, Ginkaku-ji, and other temple districts. However, popular routes can become crowded and delayed, so using rail services for part of the journey and walking the final stretch is often more efficient. Kyoto City Bus & Subway Route Map
Taxis are widely available and can be especially helpful for families, travelers carrying luggage, or visitors heading to temples in areas with limited rail access. They operate with meters, but fares are generally higher than public transport, particularly during longer journeys. Cycling can also be enjoyable along quieter streets and riverside paths, although traffic, hills, narrow roads, and busy tourist areas require care. For the smoothest sightseeing experience, check an official route planner before leaving, combine trains or subways with buses and walking, and allow extra time during weekends, holidays, and peak tourist seasons.
