Hotels and Key Attractions

For travelers eager to immerse themselves in Istanbul’s rich history, basing yourself in the historic Sultanahmet district places the city’s grandest architectural wonders right at your doorstep. If beating the morning queues at the Hagia Sophia is your top priority, the Amiral Palace Hotel is an exceptional launchpad, sitting a mere 342 meters from its doors and just 300 meters from the iconic Blue Mosque. Excellent nearby boutique alternatives like Catch Sultanahmet Hotel, just 302 meters from the Blue Mosque and Hotel Nena also keep you within a brief 500-meter stroll of these marvels. In fact, Hotel Nena is strategically positioned just 388 meters from the mysterious underground Basilica Cistern, though you will still be well within a manageable 650-meter radius of the cistern if you opt for the charming Küpeli Hotel, Lalahan Hotel, or the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Istanbul – Sirkeci. The DoubleTree Sirkeci also pulls double duty for history buffs by sitting a convenient 483 meters from the sprawling gates of Topkapi Palace. However, if you prefer trendy shopping and a buzzing nightlife scene over historic calls to prayer, you might want to skip the ancient core altogether and look across the Golden Horn to the modern, high-energy neighborhoods of Taksim or Karaköy.

Getting Around

Istanbul’s extensive public transportation network makes it possible to travel efficiently across both the European and Asian sides of the city. The Metro Istanbul system includes metro, tram, funicular, and other rail services, while the T1 tram is particularly useful for sightseeing in the historic centre. It stops near major attractions such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, Eminönü, Karaköy, and Kabataş. However, the tram does not stop directly at Galata Tower or Istanbul Modern; these attractions require a short walk from nearby stations. Istanbul also has nostalgic trams, including the Istiklal Street line in Taksim and the Moda line on the Asian side, which are separate from the modern tram network. The metro and rail systems are usually the fastest choices for longer journeys, especially during peak traffic. Travelers should combine them with trams, buses, Marmaray, or short walks because some stations are not immediately beside the attraction they serve. An Istanbulkart is the most practical option for using the city’s integrated public transport network, including metro, tram, buses, and ferries, although payment methods and acceptance can vary by service. For a scenic journey, Şehir Hatları operates regular passenger ferries as well as Bosphorus tours, while selected ferry services can also carry vehicles. Şehir Hatları Official Website

Taxis are widely available, but travelers should use licensed yellow taxis, confirm that the meter is running, and preferably book through a reputable app or official taxi stand rather than relying solely on a hotel-arranged vehicle. This can provide clearer fare information and reduce the risk of misunderstandings. Taxis are useful when carrying luggage or travelling to areas not served conveniently by rail, but traffic can make journeys slower than expected. For most visitors, the most comfortable approach is to use the T1 tram and metro for major routes, ferries for crossing the Bosphorus, and taxis only when they offer a more direct or practical journey.
