Explore Piazza del Plebiscito

Begin at Piazza del Plebiscito, one of Naples’ most important public spaces. Admire the semicircular colonnade of the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola and the nearby Royal Palace, then learn how the square developed as a civic and ceremonial centre.

A guide can connect the square with Naples’ Bourbon history, waterfront location, and wider historic centre.

Visit Teatro di San Carlo

Continue to Teatro di San Carlo, which opened in 1737 and is one of Europe’s oldest historic opera houses. Its auditorium and royal connections reflect Naples’ role as a major centre of music and court culture.

A theatre visit or guided interior tour depends on the performance schedule, rehearsals, restoration, and selected ticket. A standard city walk may include only the exterior.

Discover the MANN

Explore the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, or MANN, one of Italy’s leading museums of ancient art and archaeology. Its collections include Greek and Roman sculpture, Egyptian objects, mosaics, frescoes, and artefacts connected with Pompeii and Herculaneum.

The museum’s layout is extensive, so compare itineraries to decide whether you want a general highlights route or a focused visit dedicated to classical sculpture and Vesuvian archaeology.

See the Farnese Collection

Admire celebrated works from the Farnese Collection, including the Farnese Hercules, the Farnese Bull, and portraits of Roman emperors. These sculptures demonstrate how ancient Greek and Roman art was collected, copied, restored, and displayed across later European history.

A guide can explain the mythological subjects, scale, materials, and collecting history behind the museum’s most famous masterpieces.

Explore the Pompeii and Herculaneum Collections

Continue to the museum’s Vesuvian collections, which preserve objects and artworks from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Both cities were affected by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, but the exact date remains debated.

Pompeii was largely buried by ash, pumice, and pyroclastic deposits, while Herculaneum was overwhelmed by hot pyroclastic flows and related volcanic material. The collections provide valuable insight into domestic life, religion, commerce, and art in the Roman world.

Hotels, Key Attractions, and Nightly Rates

To truly experience the chaotic charm and deep history of Naples, choosing between the ancient historic center and the grand royal district will shape your Italian adventure. If you are captivated by art, folklore, and sacred relics, staying near the Duomo di San Gennaro puts the city's rich spiritual heart right at your doorstep. Exceptional historic bases like the atmospheric Decumani Hotel De Charme, Palazzo Firenze, and Palazzo Salgar, all cluster within a convenient 1-kilometer stroll of the cathedral. However, if you prefer grand architecture, coastal breezes, and upscale shopping, head toward the elegant pedestrian zone surrounding the Casa Vacanze Umberto I. Toledo Relais is a strategic hotel here, sitting a mere 384 meters from the gallery's stunning glass dome. Opting for Toledo Relais or highly rated nearby alternatives like Mercure Napoli Centro Angioino, P.C. Boutique H. Napoli Centro, and Rex Lifestyle Hotel places you within walking distance of Naples' most iconic landmarks, including the medieval Castel Nuovo, the grand Teatro di San Carlo, and the sweeping Piazza del Plebiscito.

Hotel prices in Naples can vary significantly based on three primary factors: location, the season of your visit, and the star rating of the hotel. Hotels situated Lungomare and Centro Storico tend to be pricier compared to those in the Central Station. Typically, hotel rates peak from April to June and September to October, while the most affordable months are from January to February. Excellent three-star hotels generally begin at rates between $105 and $244+ per night. Excellent four-star lodgings usually range from $150 to $365+ per night. For travelers seeking a lavish stay, Naples offers an impressive array of five-star hotels, with average nightly prices spanning from $177 to $789+ per night. In general, excellent three-star hotels start at around $105, while excellent five-star hotels can exceed $750 per night.

Getting Around

Naples’ historic centre is best explored on foot, with pedestrian streets and lively squares leading to attractions such as Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, Galleria Umberto I, Castel dell’Ovo, and Napoli Sotterranea. For longer journeys, the city’s public transport network includes the ANM Metro, buses, trams, funiculars, and the Trenitalia Line 2 urban railway. ANM’s Line 1, known for its artistic stations, now connects Piscinola-Scampia with Centro Direzionale through Vomero and the historic centre, with connections toward the port at Municipio. This is more accurate than describing Line 1 simply as running between Piazza Garibaldi and Piscinola. ANM Line 1

Line 2 is operated by Trenitalia and runs across Naples between Pozzuoli and San Giovanni-Barra, serving important stations such as Mergellina, Piazza Amedeo, Montesanto, Piazza Cavour, and Napoli Piazza Garibaldi. A standard ANM ticket is not automatically valid on Line 2; travelers who want to combine operators should purchase the appropriate integrated ticket. Tickets can be bought from station machines, authorized retailers, ANM points, official apps, and contactless systems where available. The Cumana railway, operated by EAV, connects Montesanto with destinations in the Phlegraean area, while buses and trams provide additional local coverage. Funiculars are useful for reaching Naples’ hilltop districts, but travelers should note that the Montesanto Funicular has been closed since 15 May 2026 for a scheduled major overhaul, with a replacement shuttle bus serving the main stations during the closure. The Central and Chiaia funiculars remain useful alternatives when operating, while the Metro and buses can also connect the historic centre with Vomero. Taxis and rental cars are available, but driving in central Naples can be stressful because of traffic, narrow streets, and limited parking. For most visitors, walking combined with Line 1, Line 2, buses, and selected rail services is the most practical way to explore the city.
